CHILDREN’S DESIGN RESIDENTIAL

CLIENT PROFILE

Recently I was hired to re-design the living space for Holly and Mark Woodward, a trendy good looking couple living in High Point, North Carolina. After completing an extensive remodel and addition to the house the family now plans to adopt a 6 month old child. In my design scenario i space planned an additional bedroom for the little one. With the anticipation of the adoption date being a month away I will need to work quickly to complete the nursery and have it installed.

The Woodward’s’ want a totally different feel for this one’s space and want the interior to feel modern, vibrant, and classic. They also want the interior to be gender neutral. I selected bedding options that are convertible and can grow with the child.

SPACE REQUIREMENTS

A convertible crib
A changing table with storage
A comfy chair and stool/ottoman
Occasional table for lamp
At least 12 feet of linear storage for soft toys, books, play items
Lamp and accessories

The Lawyer wears Prada

We have been studying personality types in residential design II and I discovered that I am an ENFJ –a.k.a. – The Teacher.

This acronym stands for:

EXTROVERTED: outgoing, energetic, communicative, and warm

INTUITIVE: idealistic, imaginative, forward-thinking and visionary

FEELING: compassionate, sympathetic, ethical, and humanitarian

JUDGING: organized, authoritative, dedicated, and ambitious

PROJECT DECRIPTION

I have been asked to redesign the office of a newly elected female district attorney in her late fifties. According to Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator, she is an ESTJ – a.k.a. – The Supervisor.

I identified the common personality traits with a personality of ESTJ.

This acronym stands for:

EXTROVERTED: dominant, outgoing, straightforward, and forceful

SENSING: practical, hands-unconventional, and detailed

THINKING: logical, objective, pragmatic, and rational

JUDGING: organized, structured, decisive, and persistent

I translated my design ideas into one cohesive design of an office for this woman. I produced an 11”x17” digital board with floor plan, furniture, fixtures, and finishes selections. I indicated in writing on the board why I chose the items or arrangement that I did based upon her personality type.

Peace, Love, No More War!

I have some catching up to do for you on my blog. In Residential Design II we studied the evolution of residential design. I chose to do a survey of the culture of the 1960’s from the Post War Era 1945-1970. I chose to do my culture survey from the eyes of someone living in Manhattan, New York.

This time period in our history had many historical and social events that occurred. President John F Kennedy was assassinated, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, and we landed on the moon. Drugs, like LSD, first hit the streets during the 1960’s. Civil rights and women’s rights were coming to the forefront during this time period as well.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

You have been hired as a set and style designer for an upcoming historical biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio. You are to research your assigned time period in American society and understand all aspects of the time period, culture, resources, social structures, clothing, and design.

This project is a two-step process consisting of research and design. First I completed a culture survey to assist me in guiding my design decisions. This culture survey covered the fashion of this period and the furniture styles. Once I had a firm understanding of my assigned time period then I created a digital design board.

I decided to do a bachelor pad set design for this project. I couldn’t help but think of the movie, “Catch Me If You Can”, in which Leonardo Dicaprio starred in, that was based on the true story of the check cashing airplane pilot “kid” back in the 1960’s that also starred Tom Hanks. Great movie!

Camp for all

Hi Bloggers,

I hope everyone had a great summer. Mine was mostly spent at school. We had a running reply to everyone around us that we were spending the summer with “Derrick”. That was our code word for saying we were basically at school 24/7.

We did our presentations for our projects to a live studio audience, a.k.a. our classmates. It is so nerve-wracking to do presentations in front of a group but we all got through it.

We did have some fun after classes were over. My family and I went to New York for a week. We had a great time and the weather was beautiful. We got to see the Guggenheim Museum and the Cloisters Monastery and of course we had to visit our favorite store; ABC carpet and home.

A great thing happened over the summer. I was able to obtain a lease on my future studio that I will be sharing with my son, Josh who just graduated from Randolph Community College with a degree in photography. We are currently painting and deciding where things are going to go, but it is really coming together.

I wanted to share with you our commercial design II project that we will be working on this semester.

We will be entering the Bernice Bienenstock Design Competition this fall. There are two categories: furniture design and interior design. We will be entering the interior design competition.

We will be designing a sleepover camp for special-needs kids and traditional kids.

We will be designing a first floor that will contain the activity area, storage, nurse’s office, 2 unisex restrooms, stage and prop room. The second floor will have the executive conference room, executive office, residential space consisting of a living/dining room, kitchen, half bath, master bedroom/bath, guest bedroom/bath, and laundry.

We recently visited the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman, NC which opened in 2004. This is a very special camp. The designers and sponsors of this camp went to great lengths to make sure this camp can accommodate any special-needs child that wants to attend and not costs their family anything to send them here. Their motto is “feel your heart race” because it is a NASCAR themed camp inspired by the late Adam Petty. The Petty family made sure to see that Adam’s dream of having a camp like this come to fruition. I will say I got a little emotional watching the promotional video of the kids playing at the camp. I am so thankful to have healthy children and I can’t even imagine what it must be like to have a special-needs child. I am so glad that camps like Victory Junction exists for these kids.

Loving the Art Deco!!

So, I went to see the new release of the movie, “the GreaT
Gatsby”, based upon the 1925 novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, with my designer friends and our professor. I LOVED the movie! The set designs and fashion were fabulous. Although, I will say l was looking mostly at Leonardo DiCaprio! Oh, my goodness, he looks fabulous!

This trip to the movies comes on the heels of our research we had gathered on the Art Deco architectural style at the Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library, High Point, NC, for a residential design project we are working on with our “clients” the Woodwards.

The American Art Deco style began here in United States around 1925 after the Paris art exhibitions of that same year. This style came about when there was a great deal of economic turmoil. This style brought splendor and power back to the population.
